As deeply associated with vanity the word ‘flexing’ may be, to us practical people, flexing muscles has a useful, yet little-known purpose: it helps to develop more size and strength.
Good, solid flexing is basically an isometrics exercise
It’s well known that isometrics are a good way to build muscle mass and strength.
Isometrics, for those who don’t know, are a method of working the muscles without using a range of motion, but instead holding a static (and often weighted) contraction of the muscle to generate fatigue that way.
Many of the worlds top bodybuilders flex in between sets, not for mere show, but because it helps to get that little bit extra out of the muscles, and also is a method to help develop better muscular control.
Muscular control is down to the nervous system. The better our muscular control, the more fibres we can recruit in a lift, so the heavier we can lift, and in turn the more muscle fibres we can fatigue the bigger and stronger we become as a result.
Try it the next time you are at the gym. And, if anyone calls you for vanity… tell ‘em to shut it and visit this site or forever hold their peace!
