Dumbbell Presses: Superior To Military Presses?

Military presses are one of the most effective exercises for building front and side deltoid heads, but, dumbbell presses are quite possibly even more effective.

Here’s why…

Dumbbell presses allow for greater range of motion…

And, as you may already know, the greater the range of motion you can put a muscle through, the more fibres you fatigue, and the better the overall results of the exercise.

Well, compared to the military press which is performed with a barbell, thus locking the range of motion, dumbbells allow for greater range of motion when working the deltoids. Plus, you have the added benefit of having to control two separate weights which can only be a good thing so far as building muscle size and strength is concerned. (Although, this also means you may be lifting slightly less poundage.)

Dumbbell presses are performed like so…

Take a dumbbell in each hand, and hold at shoulder level, forearms pointing vertical, with the elbows slightly out to the sides. Now, press the dumbbells straight up overhead so they touch together at the very top, and lower slowly.

You may perform dumbbell presses seated or standing.
