Does Muscle Weigh More Than Fat?

This is a funny question, because it appears to make no logical sense depending on how you initially look at it, but it’s one I’ve asked myself before, and only recently discovered the answer to. So, does muscle weigh more than fat?

Naturally, units of weight don’t change. A pound is a pound, a stone is a stone, etc. But, if, for instance, 2 jars of equal size were to be filled to the brim, one with muscle, the other with fat, then the one with muscle would weigh more.

This is simply because muscle is more dense than fat, so it all comes down to volume. A pound of fat is simply a larger bit of substance than a pound of muscle.

How much larger?

Well, it’s thought that muscle tissue is approximately 20-25% more dense than fat. Simply put, for equal weights, fat would be 20-25% larger than muscle. Or, in weight terms, if equal volumes (i.e.: 2 jars filled to the same level) were measured, muscle would weigh 20-25% more than the fat.

This explains why many people who are obese and there appears to be ‘more’ of them than someone who is well muscled, may in fact weigh less than the muscled person.

Remember: volumes being equal, muscle weighs more than fat. (I hope that’s cleared it up.)
