Milk: The Judas
It always hurts to be betrayed. And, in the last 2 days, it’s become obvious that I’ve put too much trust in a certain element of my diet which has suddenly decided to conspire against me.
In short, milk is out of my diet, effective immediately.
It’s not a move I wanted to make, but a measure which had to be taken. Milk was, I thought, my number 1 ally in this battle that is physique building; but my hand was forced.
I should’ve seen it coming, really. You see, I’ve always known that milk could, at times, have adverse effects on me. Even before I started drinking it by the ton for bodybuilding.
But, the strange thing is, for the last 2 months and more, despite the copious amounts I’ve been drinking – the severity of the issue didn’t seem to be too troubling. It’s negative effect on me was, for the most part, negligible. So I continued.
But, ever since I recovered from my stomach bug (and yes, it almost certainly was a stomach bug – because I actually cut milk out during the time, and still suffered), and reintroduced milk back into my diet… my stomach has been revolting big style.
And despite my best attempts to strike up a peace deal through a mediator known as lactase enzymes, I think the time has come to finally accept the truth: milk and I have irreconcilable differences, have become sworn enemies, and now probably always will be.
So, where does that leave me?
Time and convenience wise, worse off. It’s dead easy to pour pint after pint of milk and down it throughout the day. It’s not so easy to prepare more meals, which I’m now going to have to do.
Also, milk is an awesome source of protein, second only to egg whites. Plus, having milk before bedtime is thought to be the best thing a person can do, given it’s protein source (casein) is slow digesting. So, it’s a bit of a blow looking at it from that angle.
Physical wellbeing wise, I’m sure I’ll undoubtedly end up better off: no more regular stomach upset. (Who wants that?)
Plus, thinking about it, my bodybuilding efforts may actually end up better off for it, after all. Because let’s face it, if your stomach is turning cartwheels and everything you eat seems to be going through you, surely the nutrients you are taking in aren’t doing you much good. So, by taking milk out of my diet, I may actually be better off, overall.
Time will tell.
Also, down the line, I may try lactose free milk as an absolute last-ditch attempt to include this great source of nutrients in my diet. If not, too bad. The game continues…
